Rule number one? Wedding planner Sarah Mastriano stresses that you can't go wrong with taking a sentimental approach. Searching for a favorite musical act of the couple, a chess set for the duo that is always studying their endgame, or a piece of artwork representing the city where they met are some ideas to get the wheels turning. Her other key piece of advice is to neglect the words “wedding,” “bride,” and “groom” in your initial search. “Skip anything that says something like ‘bride’ or ‘groom’ on it. They're going to receive so much of that and how many wedding related mugs does one household need?” offers Mastriano.
Sarah Mastriano is a wedding and event planner based in New Jersey. She also specializes in custom gifting for weddings and beyond.
What to do instead: “Take a moment and think about the couple, who they are, colors that they are drawn to in their home or within their wardrobe. Think about their taste and interests,” says Mastriano. “Getting your brain moving about the couple themselves will spark some keywords to start your search. For instance, if the bride loves Scandinavian-style art or the couple love to stock their home bar with cool glassware, start searching for items that fit those descriptions.

The couple may be set on the coffee mug front, but we doubt they have an elegant wedding photo lantern. When they’re relaxing at home, they can turn on the attached LED flameless candle and think of you every time. FYI: This wedding lantern ships out within one-to-two business days and has expedited shipping options.

Zoom in on a gift that feels specific to the couple. You’re browsing Etsy, after all, because you want to think beyond a traditional wedding registry gift and/or supplement a wedding registry purchase with something hand-tailored to the pair. As with online shopping anywhere, look at the star ratings of a product and customer reviews.
When shopping on Etsy, try this smart rule of thumb from Mastriano: In addition to reading the reviews, also look at them for photo examples of the purchases. “This is a great way to see an unedited version of what you will be potentially purchasing to do some quality control.”
“Going the more handpicked route for a couple's wedding gift is always a nice touch especially if you know the couple's individual taste and lifestyle well,” says Mastriano, noting that if the couple is big into home decor or super sentimental items, working with a local artisan or even a small business or artist that they already support could be an incredibly personal gesture.
On Etsy, you can also search for products by location, which might be a nice way to include a hat tip to where they live. While shopping beyond a registry is totally fine, Mastriano cautions that you should always consider purchasing something from the couple's registry or contributing to their honeymoon fund in addition to getting more creative with your gift selection.
Yes, you should probably allot more time than you think you need. Mastriano says to always check the location of the Etsy seller to make sure it aligns with your purchase timeline (i.e., if the maker is selling from overseas and you need the gift within a week or two, try to find someone more local).
