France sent a message on its way to grabbing a spot in the EuroBasket championship game. Guerschon Yabusele scored 22 points, and France rolled past Poland 95-54 in the semifinals of the European championships. Next up for France: either Spain or host Germany, who were meeting in the late semifinal. The gold- and bronze-medal games are Sunday.

When 11 Black quarterbacks started in Week 1, it was another indication that those racial stereotypes have finally been overcome. Four of the five largest contracts in the sport have been given to Black QBs, including Deshaun Watson’s fully guaranteed $230 million deal from the Cleveland Browns. Despite the increase in Black quarterbacks and Black officials, who represent about 40% of the league’s officiating crew, the growth in diversity isn’t reflected on the sideline.

Patriots quarterback Mac Jones returned to practice a day after sitting out with an illness. It puts the No. 15 pick overall in last year's draft on track to start New England’s matchup with Pittsburgh. He has never missed a start. Jones was a full participant for Wednesday’s practice after suffering a back injury last weekend in a season-opening loss at Miami. His absence on Thursday marked the first time he had missed a regular-season practice. If he can’t play, backup Brian Hoyer would be in line to make his first start since early in the 2020 season.

Evander Kane and the San Jose Sharks have reached a settlement on the grievance he filed over the termination of his contract last season. The Sharks announced the agreement that they said will not adversely affect them financially or competitively. San Jose terminated Kane's contract in January for violating virus protocol while in the minors. Kane and the NHL Players’ Association then filed a grievance contending the Sharks didn't have sufficient grounds to make that move. The contract termination cost Kane just under $23 million from the $49 million, seven-year contract he signed in May 2018.

With two fourth-quarter sacks and a forced fumble, Bradley Chubb’s return to form Monday night in Seattle was a silver lining in an otherwise disappointing start to the Broncos’ season.

Roberto Bautista has fought back to beat Canada’s Vasek Pospisil 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 and give Spain a 1-0 lead in their group tie at the Davis Cup Finals. Carlos Alcaraz is the newly crowned world No. 1 and U.S. Open champion. He will next face Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime later on Friday. The indoor venue in Valencia is packed with Spaniards eager to see their new teen idol. The 19-year-old Alcaraz was busy signing autographs and posing for photos after practice. Bautista helped Spain beat Serbia 3-0 on Wednesday while Alcaraz was resting after jetting home from New York where he won his first Grand Slam on Sunday.

The Miami Dolphins are placing right tackle Austin Jackson on short-term injured reserve after he hurt his right ankle against the Patriots. Jackson will miss at least four games, including Sunday’s matchup at Baltimore. Greg Little is expected to start in Jackson’s place. Left tackle Terron Armstead has a toe injury and is questionable for the game.

Yunus Musah will miss the United States’ last two World Cup warmup matches because of a left groin injury, depriving the Americans of a chance for their preferred midfield trio to play together ahead of the tournament in November. Johnny Cardoso of the Brazilian club Internacional replaced Musah for the matches against Japan on Sept. 23 in Düsseldorf, Germany, and Saudi Arabia four days later in Murcia, Spain. The first-choice midfield of Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie and Musah is the most settled portion of the American lineup. The trio has started together just seven times.

Marshall offensive line coach Eddy Morrissey has resigned for unspecified personal reasons. The school’s athletic department announced the resignation Friday. A school statement didn't elaborate on the resignation. Morrissey came to Marshall after head coach Charles Huff was hired in 2021. Among many other stints, Morrissey served one season as an offensive line assistant at Austin Peay in 2019 and as an assistant at Mississippi State in 2018. Marshall is coming off a win at Notre Dame and plays at Bowling Green on Saturday.

John Stearns, a four-time time All-Star catcher with the New York Mets, has died after a long battle with cancer. He was 71. Stearns, who played football and baseball at the University of Colorado, died Thursday night in Denver, according to the Mets. He passed away less than three weeks after attending an Old Timers’ Day at Citi Field in New York that coincided with the Mets’ 60th anniversary. He was noticeably thin in his Mets jersey on Aug. 27 and waved to the crowd when he was introduced on the field.

Churchill Downs has modified paths to the Kentucky Derby and Oaks, awarding points to the top five finishers in qualifying races and increasing significance for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and late prep season events. Most Derby prep races during the qualifying series for 3-year-olds will award points on a 10-4-3-2-1 sliding scale after using a 10-4-2-1 system since 2013. The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Keeneland in November will increase points 30-12-9-6-3. Points were increased for select Derby qualifiers and several stakes races were elevated to preps.

PayPal says the company will no longer sponsor the Phoenix Suns if owner Robert Sarver remains part of the franchise when his suspension ends. PayPal says its current partnership deal with the Suns ends after the coming 2022-23 season, meaning it will expire during Sarver’s one-year suspension from the NBA. Sarver was suspended this week, plus fined $10 million, after an investigation showed a pattern of lewd, misogynistic, and racist speech and conduct during his 18 years as owner of the Suns.

A German government minister has asked UEFA to remove Belarus from trying to qualify for the 2024 European Championship which her country is hosting. Interior minister Nancy Faeser cites Belarus' support for Russia and the military invasion of Ukraine. UEFA says it received the letter from Faeser and would reply to her. The request comes three weeks before Germany hosts the Euro 2024 qualifying groups draw in Frankfurt. Russia already was banned from the draw. UEFA acted in March to prohibit Belarusian teams from hosting games on their territory but stopped short of a competitive ban.

NASCAR champion Kyle Larson has signed a three-year contract extension through 2026 with Hendrick Motorsports. The extension includes sponsor HendrickCars.com, which will sponsor the No. 5 Chevrolet for 35 races a season. Larson’s extension and the sponsorship renewal are concurrent. The original deal for HendrickCars.com to become Larson’s primary sponsor was announced last July when Rick Hendrick’s online automobile site enjoyed massive traffic spikes whenever it was featured on Larson’s car. Larson heads into Saturday night’s elimination playoff race at Bristol Motor Speedway ranked eighth in the standings.

Wolverhampton forward Raul Jimenez hasn’t recovered from a groin injury and won’t be available to play against Manchester City on Saturday. The Mexico international has been slowed by injuries this season though he was included Thursday in his national team’s squad for World Cup warm-up matches this month in California. The 31-year-old Jimenez was ruled out of Wolves’ last game — a 1-0 win over Southampton on Sept. 3 — just before kickoff because he felt a pain in his groin while warming up. He had also sustained a knee injury in preseason.

Costly construction delays, a leadership vacancy linked to a volatile political climate and a lack of sponsors amid a spreading financial crisis has prompted International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach to acknowledge the “challenges” facing organizers of the 2026 Winter Games in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo. The IOC’s coordination commission visit has been postponed by three months to December because of national elections in Italy slated for later this month so it was left to Bach to handle matters during a visit with outgoing premier Mario Draghi. Bach says there are challenges "in particular light of this new emerging world order and the financial and economic crisis.”

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs offense had been struggling all night against a ferocious Los Angeles Chargers pass rush when Jaylen Watson, an unheralded seventh-round draft pick, and the rest of the defense bailed them out. It was the second straight week that the Chiefs defense came up big, and an encouraging sign for a franchise that has often leaned far too heavily on Mahomes and his prolific offense to simply outscore opponents in big games.

Aston Villa midfielder Boubacar Kamara has been called up for France's upcoming Nations League matches as a replacement for the injured Adrien Rabiot. The French soccer federation says France coach Didier Deschamps decided to replace Rabiot as a precautionary measure after assessing the Juventus player’s left calf injury. France plays Austria on Sept. 22 and then travels to Copenhagen three days later to take on Denmark.

Chile has lost its appeal to replace Ecuador at the World Cup in Qatar but the verdict by FIFA will likely lead the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. FIFA dismissed Chile’s argument that Ecuador player Byron Castillo was actually Colombian and ineligible to play in World Cup qualifying games. He played in eight of them for Ecuador. The verdict keeps Ecuador on track to play Ecuador in the opening game of the World Cup on Nov. 20. The group also includes the Netherlands and Senegal. The Chilean soccer federation can now make an urgent appeal to CAS.

Roberto Martinez is not turning his back on Jason Denayer. The Belgium coach called up the center back on Friday for upcoming Nations League matches against Wales and the Netherlands despite his lack of playing time. Denayer has been without a club since he left Lyon this summer. Martinez said Denayer won't play in either of the games. Martinez also called up uncapped defender Zeno Debast in his 30-man squad.

France’s sports minister has ordered an investigation into the French Football Federation after its president, Noël Le Graët, faced claims of sexual harassment. Amélie Oudéa-Castéra met with Le Graët on Friday morning and then announced the investigation. It's known as an  “audit and control mission” and will be carried out by the state inspection body in charge of sports. The meeting came one day after the federation announced its decision to file a defamation lawsuit against the So Foot magazine which reported earlier this month that Le Graët allegedly harassed several female employees.

Spain coach Luis Enrique has provided some surprises in his second-to-last squad before the World Cup. His list of 25 players for upcoming Nations League games includes newcomers Nico Williams and Borja Iglesias. Williams is Athletic Bilbao's 20-year-old winger. Iglesias is a 29-year-old striker for Real Betis. The most noticeable absence is Barcelona forward Ansu Fati. Spain hosts Switzerland in Zaragoza on Sept. 24 and plays Portugal in Braga three days later in the Nations League. Luis Enrique announced his squad while cycling near Madrid. The video showed the names of the selected players imposed on the hilly and winding road.

Former Paris Saint-Germain player Aminata Diallo has been arrested and again taken into police custody in connection with an attack on one of her teammates. French media quoting justice officials say Diallo was arrested on suspicion of having set up the attack on her teammate. It was the second time Diallo was arrested as part of an investigation into the attack last year on Kheira Hamraoui. Diallo was taken into custody in November and released without charges. Hamraoui was attacked following an evening out with Diallo and other teammates. Hamraoui was hit several times with a metal bar and needed stitches to her hands and legs.
